Retaliation is the act of punishing someone for complaining about or opposing discrimination, harassment, or other mistreatment. In some cases, retaliation can even involve violence or threats of violence.

In the context of human resources, retaliation can refer to a variety of retaliatory behaviours, such as firing an employee in retaliation for filing a complaint, demoting an employee in retaliation for reporting harassment or reducing an employee’s hours in retaliation for speaking out about working conditions.
